Cefa's training model

cefa is proud of a unique training model. It is unique in the sense that training occurs in communities, is outcomes based, programmes are accredited and on various NQF levels. All programmes comply with the requirements of the NQF, SAQA and the relevant ETQA. Training takes place at the workplace which ensures that people are trained whilst they continue to work, thereby remaining economically independent. Together with the training of learners, members of the community are empowered to be used as facilitators and are supported by mentorship and coaching. This way indigenous knowledge is embedded in the subject matter and sustainability of the project is ensured.

The twelve months of training are divided into 3 cycles that consist of a theoretical and a practical component. The duration of the theoretical sessions is 2 weeks at a time, while the practical sessions cover a period of approximately 9 to 11 weeks at a time. During the period of practical training learners are guided by mentors, while they function as employees in the workplace (Social Auxiliary Workers receive guidance from Social Workers).

Assessment is done continuously. One of the many assessment instruments used, for example, is practical assignments. These assignments are performed on the basis of comprehensive guidelines that are provided. At the end of each theoretical session, a written examination is done. When learners are declared competent at the end of a year, a certificate is awarded. Competent Social Auxiliary Work learners can then register with the South African Council for Social Service Professions as Social Auxiliary Workers.

In a nutshell the training occurs as follow:

  • The learning programme begins with a 1 day registration and orientation of the learners. Simultaneously the mentors are orientated and introduced to the program. The learners and mentors are provided with a learner manual in which some frequently asked questions and issues are addressed. Everybody is also provided with a schedule of learning.
  • Intensive mentor training then commences for a period of 2 days and repeated 3 times during the course of the training to update and further assist mentors in their role.
  • Approximately 40 working days per year are needed, during which the learners are withdrawn from the workplace and gathered at central venues for the theoretical training.
  • 3 modules are offered during the cause of 10 working days
  • For the next 9 to 11 weeks the learners function as employees of the workplace (Social Auxiliary Workers) in the office under the guidance of mentors (Social Workers). Learners complete and submit their practical assignments during this time.
  • Assessment is done continuously throughout the program and variety of assessment tools is used.
  • After 9 to 11 learners assemble at the training venues 3 days prior to commencement of the theoretical session in order to write examination on the completed modules.
  • Once a learner is declared competent, the module, which includes both the theoretical and practical sections, is regarded as completed.
  • At the end of the 9 modules learners complete a structured case study after which final assessment is done.
  • Learners compile portfolio’s of evidence during the training period and these portfolios are moderated and finally verified by the relevant SETA.
  • After the SETA has endorsed the competent learners, certificates are issued.
  • At the end of the one year period the successful Social Auxiliary Work learners can register as Social Auxiliary Workers with the South African Council for Social Service Professions.
